First Gin Delivery by Canoe in Ghent
Who hasn't heard about the circulation plan in Ghent? It was probably the most discussed topic in the East Flemish capital in 2019. This has an impact not only on its residents, but certainly also on logistics in the city. Streets you can't drive into, permits you need to apply for in time, or busy rush hours. It is nowadays complex to reach your destination in the Ghent city centre. So we went looking for an alternative solution.
Initially, we thought of transport by bicycle, as several companies do nowadays. For larger deliveries, we would then have to look at an electric cargo bike, which of course immediately drives up the cost for a small start-up like ours. So we had to change our approach.
Since we both absolutely love water sports, we then thought of using the 2 rivers that flow through Ghent: the Leie and the Scheldt. There are currently no restrictions here and moreover, you have a unique view of our city.
There are only 2 possibilities when it comes to transport over water: a motor or muscle power. Since we both move less than we would like in our jobs or while studying, the canoe seemed like a unique and environmentally friendly alternative for transporting our gin to the city centre. It also offers us the possibility to take a considerable load on board (which is much less convenient in a kayak).
And so it happened β since 20 April 2019, we deliver our Ghent local product in the city centre via the water, with the Graslei as our favourite mooring spot. Will you wave to us if you see us paddling by? That makes our journey even more fun!
